where I drove on Lake Michigan
This first picture, taken in June, is of the Little Bay de Noc public access site on Delta County Road 515 where I drove on Lake Michigan in January.  The snow was really deep and I was only able to go out about half a mile or so,  but I had been told that my car might not be able to handle it  and it did.  Hah!

The second picture is a view of Lake Michigan shortly before nightfall, from the public beach in Escanaba.

Having never been to this area of the state before (the South Central region of the U.P.), I landed just outside of Escanaba in August 2000 due to my original getaway plans being thrown waaaay off.  I ended up falling in love with the land, the sky, the water, and the endless backwoods roads  so I stayed for my remaining 3 days away from home.
I will never forget the quiet hours I spent on the couch in my motel room just staring out across Lake Michigan.  During those three days I experienced the most amazing sense of peacefulness that I'd ever known.  It was a feeling I yearned to keep hold of.  The morning I left for my journey back home I took one last wistful look at the lake   and I knew I would have to return to this place as soon as I was able to.

On October 21st, two months to the day of my first arrival here, I moved 450 miles from the Metro Detroit Area to Escanaba   :o)    I am in constant awe at the vast, wondrous beauty that I am now surrounded by so I decided to try and capture some of it  to share with family and friends....
Fluffy clouds, the Escanaba River Hydro, a sunset opposite the Escanaba beach, woods off of Delta County Road 503, and trees reflected in a puddle on Federal Forest Hwy 2235.

While driving down Delta County Road 420 I caught a glimpse of this amazing cross sculpture and had to stop to get a closer look.

Birds in the sky, flowers on land, fish under the sea....
It's one of the most beautifully symbolic works of art that I've ever seen.  I am particularly curious about the opposing symbols on each side of the cross (they're the exact same shape, inverted).  I view them as being representative of human males and females, but they also look somewhat astrological in nature.

Hmmmm...

I am completely captivated by it!
This picture was taken a little further down the road at a public access site.  I've spent a few hours here reading and staring and listening.  Very peaceful.
The last picture of this section was taken several miles further down County Rd. 420 at another, very secluded, public access site on the Escanaba River that I was very pleased to discover.  Nearby is a small farm with a few buffalo that I'd hoped to get a shot of,  but the day I took this drive it had been raining and the buffalo were not to be found.
